Experiencing domestic abuse as a male: Physical Abuse
It is estimated that 1 in 6 UK men have experienced some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime.
Of those who seek help from national male domestic abuse charity ManKind, 69% have experienced physical abuse within their relationship.
However, it is thought that less than 10% of males seek help for domestic abuse. This includes all forms of domestic abuse, such as coercive control, financial abuse, stalking and harassment, emotional and psychological abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse.
Like all domestic abuse, physical abuse is carried out due to a desire to exert power or control over a partner. Like all domestic abuse, it can be extremely upsetting and painful to experience, and is extremely dangerous.
If you, or someone you know, is experiencing physical abuse within a relationship, contact NIDAS today.
What is physical abuse?
Within domestic abuse, physical abuse is where one person is repeatedly aggressive or violent towards another, resulting in injury or fear of injury.
This can include:
- Punching
- Kicking
- Choking
- Burning
- Shaking
- Biting
- Beating
Physical abuse can be severe enough to cause permanent injury, or even death. Regardless of how sever the abuse is, it is illegal, and you don’t deserve to be treated this way.
How is physical abuse experienced by males, different to physical abuse experienced by females?
It’s not.
There is no difference in physical abuse experienced by any gender. Abuse is abuse, and is not ok.
However, men may not acknowledge or report abuse by a partner due to previous stigmas or stereotypes. This includes thinking that ‘men can’t be beaten-up by women’ or that they should ‘man-up’.
If ignored, physical abuse can escalate and become worse over time. It’s important for your own wellbeing and safety that physical abuse is acknowledged, and that help is sort.
